Indianmandarins has reliably learnt that the date of filing the annual property return (APR) for officials may be extended beyond Oct 15. It is further learnt that the clause dealing with the declaration of immovable property may also be modified and simplified to prevent misuse of information furnished therein. Many officials have reportedly expressed grave apprehensions that the property data that they may provide could be misinterpreted and used against them. Since the issues raised were of prime importance from the viewpoint of governance, the matter was referred to the Standing Committee of Parliament dealing with the matter. Even though the Committee has not decided one way or the other, it was convinced that officials have a valid point on immovable property among other things. Since the Committee has to fix a lot of points before its makes its recommendations, the DoPT may have no option but to extend the deadline for filing the APR.
