Indianmandarins has learnt that ahead of Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s visit to Russia for a summit meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin later this month, the country’s Defence Acquisition Council has cleared the purchase of five S-400 air defence systems from Russia.
The deal is expected to cost around Rs 300 billion ($4.52 billion), but the final price tag would be negotiated during the procurement process.
The country’s air defences are old and outdated and Prime Minister Narendra Modi is said to be keen to modernise defences against airborne attacks. The S-400 system can track multiple aircraft and cruise missile targets simultaneously and destroy them mid-air.
