Women and Child Development Minister Maneka has faced both fair and unfair criticism for the new Juvenile Justice Act. But the act, described as harsh and cruel by child rights activists, has also earned her some international acclaim for one of its provisions that prescribes enhanced punishment for selling tobacco products to juveniles. Various global and national public health organisations — the Southeast Asia Tobacco Control Alliance, Action on Smoking and Health Foundation from Thailand, International UNION against TB and Lung Diseases, Aga Khan University and Hospital, Karachi, Health Institute Association Turkey, and Voluntary Health Association of India, among others — have written to the minister, expressing their appreciation of her efforts in controlling the usage of tobacco and tobacco products among juveniles.
