New Delhi (05.04.2021): The Ministry of Ports, Shipping, and Waterways celebrated the 58th National Maritime Day in commemoration of the maiden voyage of the first Indian flag merchant vessel ‘S.S.LOYALTY’ of Scindia Steam Navigation Company from Mumbai to London on 5 April 1919.

The theme of the 2021 National Maritime Day is ‘Sustainable Shipping beyond COVID-19’ in tune with GoI ‘Aatma Nirbhar Bharat’ initiative.

On the occasion, Mansukh Mandaviya, Minister of State(I/C) for Ports, Shipping, and Waterways congratulated the maritime community and appreciated their hard work, zeal, and courage and the role played in the times of the COVID pandemic.

He pointed out that Maritime India Vision-2030, recently launched by PM Narendra Modi, is a comprehensive vision document for the next decade to strengthen India's shipping industry in terms of technology.

He added the objective was to once again become the global maritime leader as we were in the past.

While launching an e-magazine as a souvenir for the 58th National Maritime Day, he also presented awards instituted by the National Maritime Day Celebration Committee headed by DG Shipping.

Ministry's secretary, Dr. Sanjeev Ranjan, informed the audience that the GoI was pursuing progressive policy changes to regain a leadership position in the global maritime community.

The occasion also invited participation by senior Ministry officials, DG Shipping, officials of SCI, port officials, and representatives of the maritime community through video conferencing.
