The Union Government on Wednesday constoruted as four-member committee headed by Shashi Shekhar Vempati (CEO- Prasar Bharti) to review the guidelines on television rating gencies in India. The four member committee includes Shalabh (Professor of Statistics at IIT Kanpur), Pulok Ghosh (Centre for Public Policy) and Rajkumar Upadhyay (Executive Director, Centre for Development of Telematics).

It may be underlined that recently Shashi Tharoor led Parliamentary panel on IT had unanimously questioned the current system of measuring audience estimates through Television Rating Points (TRP) is flawed and that the technology it depends on was obsolete.

The four-member committee headed by Prasar Bharti CEO will study and analyse past recommendations by various expert groups on TV rating systems and will revisit the I&B Ministry’s existing guidelines on TRP. The committee will also asses the existing system and study the TRAI recommendations and will also consider the requirements and expectations of the stakeholders.
