Speculations are rife as to who may be appointed as the next C&AG after the retirement of Shashikant Sharma next month. Indianmandarins has reliably learnt that the NaMo administration may spring a surprise by appointing Prasenjit Mukherjee who retired over two months ago as Deputy C&AG. Mukherjee belongs to the 1980 batch of IA&AS. And as Deputy C&AG, he was responsible for the administration of the department comprising of 137 offices in India and abroad and having a manpower of over 47000 people. As Dy CAG (Main), he was also head of the Indian Audit & Accounts Service (IA & AS).
Until recently, IAS officers were normally made the CAG. For the past few months, the names of Shaktikanta Das (former Secretary DEA & Fin Secretary designate) RP Watal (former Fin Secretary & Secretary Expenditure), former Power Secretary P K Pujari (IAS:1981:GJ), and Ms. Anjuli Chib Duggal (IAS:1981:PB), the outgoing DFS Secretary, were in the air for the post.
If Mukherjee gets the coveted posting of C&AG, speculations may shift and focus on the appointment of Home and Defense Secretaries as these posts are also slated to fall vacant following the completion of the term of the officials holding these posts.
