Former Defence Secretary R K Mathur was sworn in as Chief Information Commissioner by President Pranab Mukherjee on Monday. The post of CIC had fallen vacant after Vijai Sharma completed his tenure on December 1, 2015. Mathur will have a tenure of about three years till he attains the age of 65 years.
Mathur was appointed CIC on December 18, 2015, breaking away from the convention of appointing the head from among the serving Information Commissioners. The appointment followed a bench of Supreme Court judges censuring the government, asking it to fill up the vacancies of CIC and information commissioners, or produce the record showing that no one was found eligible. This compelled Prime Minister Narendra Modi-led selection committee, which has Finance Minister Arun Jaitley and leader of Congress Party in Lok Sabha Mallikarjuna Kharge as its members, to choose and select the CIC boss.
