Uttarakhand chief minister Trivendra Singh Rawat and state chief secretary Utpal Kumar Singh have done little credit to their office first by imposing a ban on entry of journalists in the secretariat and then withdrawing the ban order as hastily as it was imposed.
Of course, there are every kind of journalists in the country. Admittedly, some of them do what may not qualify exactly as journalism. This does not mean, though, that banning the entry of journalists in the secretariat is a solution. There are several ways to deal with undesirable elements masquerading as journalists. And being masters in social affairs, public representatives and civil servants know how to keep undesirable elements in check.
Since it is never too late to do the right thing, the Uttarakhand government’s decision to reverse its ban on journalists access to the secretariat is a welcome move, even though it was made under pressure from the Press Council of India and eminent citizens and journalists’ bodies.
