New Delhi (17.11.2021): The Centre on November 17 extended the tenure of Sanjay Kumar Mishra (IRS IT:1984) as Director, Enforcement Directorate for a period of one year; days after the ordinance increasing the agency head's tenure from two years to up to five years. Mishra was to retire on November 18. He will now remain ED chief till November 18, 2022, or until further orders.

Mishra, about a year ago, was given an extension for a year on completion of the then two-year fixed tenure after the 2018 order of his appointment as ED chief was modified (retrospectively) with the President's approval.

It may be underlined that the retrospective extension was challenged before the Apex Court (SC) which upheld the Government's power to extend tenures whereas underlined that such drastic measures should be taken only rarely.

President of India had on November 13, 2021, promulgated two ordinances that allowed the Central government to extend the tenures of the directors of the Central Bureau of Investigation and the Enforcement Directorate from two years to up to five years.
