New Delhi (25.06.2024): Former Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla has filed nomination for the post of Lok Sabha Speaker for the 18th Lok Sabha and now Speaker's post will see an election for the first time after the ruling BJP-led NDA and the I.N.D.I.A. block failed to reach a consensus. The opposition has decided to field veteran Congress leader K Suresh. Meanwhile, West Bengal CM Mamata Banerjee announced not to support Suresh as she was not consulted on this. The government had deployed Defence Minister Rajnath Singh and Parliamentary Affairs Minister Kiren Rijiju to build a consensus on the Lok Sabha Speaker candidate. But the consensus could not have been reached about as the Opposition demanded post of Deputy Speaker’s as per the convention on which NDA remained non-committal.
This was not acceptable as the BJP-led NDA did not want any conditional support. Rahul Gandhi said party president Mallikarjun Kharge had received a call from Rajnath Singh to extend support to the NDA's candidate. The BJP had appointed AIADMK's M Thambi Durai as Deputy Speaker in 2014. The post has been vacant since 2019.
