Chennai Bench (IT Settlement Comm); runs without full time VC & Member

IT Settlement Commission

The Chennai chapter of Additional Bench of IT Settlement Commission has been running headless since April 10, 2014. After Mrs Prema Malini Vasan completed her tenure as Vice Chairman on April 10, 2014 the additional charge was given to D Dasgupta who had taken over as Member (Additional Bench, Chennai) in the month of December 2013.

Interestingly, one post of Member is, reportedly, also running vacant since June 2014 and the additional charge remains with S K Sahu, Member of Additional Bench II, Mumbai.

The Additional Bench of IT Settlement Commission comprises two Members which is headed by a Vice Chairman.

‘Indianmandarins’ had reported on 08 February that the Principal Bench of Income Tax Settlement Commission was running headless and Vice Chairman G C Jain (IRS IT:1976) was carrying out the additional charge of Chairman.

IT Settlement Commission, a quasi judicial Alternative Dispute Resolution body, was set up in 1976 on the recommendations of Justice K.N. Wanchoo Committee, the Direct Taxes Enquiry Committee (1971). The Wanchoo Committee had conceived of the Settlement Commission as a mechanism to allow a one-time tax evader (Income Tax & Wealth Tax) or an unintended defaulter to make clean breast of his affairs.
