The Standing Committee of the IIT Council (SCIC) on Thursday accepted the recommendation of an expert panel to hike annual fee by three times and introduce an aptitude test to screen IIT aspirants from next year. However, the final call on the issue has to be taken by HRD minister Smriti Irani who heads the IIT Council.
The SCIC is a sub-committee of the IIT Council, the highest decision-making body for the 22 premier engineering colleges. It is headed by Ashok Misra, chairman of the Board of Governors of IIT-Roorkee. The SCIC meets from time to time to decide on pressing matters.
The IITs have been considering an increase in their tuition fee for some time. The last meeting of the IIT Council in October 2015 could not arrive at a consensus on the issue. A committee of IIT directors was subsequently constituted and tasked with finding ways to achieve greater financial autonomy. This committee recently suggested an over threefold hike in fee for the undergraduate course from Rs 90,000 per annum to Rs 3 lakh.
