In a sudden move Punjab Government shunted out its police chief Sumedh Singh Saini (IPS:1982:PB) and appointed Suresh Arora (IPS:1982:PB) as new DGP of the state. Prior to this Suresh Arora served as DGP & Chief Director, Vigilance Bureau. Till today morning Arora was looking for some crucially important assignment in Govt of India as he had been on ‘offer-list’ since September this year. The outgoing DGP S S Saini has been given the new charge of Chairman, Punjab Police Housing Corporation.
Reportedly, the Punjab Govt took this move after it faced criticism over law and order situation in the wake of protests over blasphemy incidents. For last few days Punjab was rocked by protests over alleged desecration of holy book. The State police had come under attack especially after two persons were killed in firing in Faridkot (Behbal Kalan village) while they were protesting.
