New Delhi (04.04.2024): It is written on the wall that Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) is making yet another comeback in 2024 to form the government at the Centre even opposition accepts this in private but some recent developments appear to have broken the campaign momentum of the BJP and provided grounds for the Opposition to have some foothold. Will the BJP be able to regain its momentum once again or the Opposition will further dent the party’s chances in the Lok Sabha elections for which Prime Minister Narendra Modi has set the target of 370 seats in the Lok Sabha for his party alone and 400+ for the NDA. There are many issues but will the Opposition be able to stop BJP’s electoral juggernaut or the saffron outfit will once again succeed in side-tracking these issues to form the government. Delving deeper into the matter may help for a better understanding on the matter.
Electoral Bonds declared unconstitutional
The Supreme Court of India asking State Bank of India to make purchase and realisation details of the electoral bonds has opened up Pandoras Box which the SC also declared as unconstitutional. Though the missing name of Adani Group in the list of doners gave certain relief to the BJP but the party emerging as the biggest beneficiary of funds through bonds had blunt its image as an organisation unleashing war against corruption. Interestingly, the BJP redeemed maximum donations through bonds followed by the Trinamool CongressThe Congress too received huge funds through bonds which means no one has the moral authority to question the BJP. The BJP is also arguing the practice being transparent.
Counting of 100% EVM and VVPAT paper slips
The Supreme Court of India recently issued notice on a petition seeking counting of all Voter Verified Paper Audit Trail (VVPAT) paper slips in elections, instead of verification of only five randomly selected Electronic Voting Machines (EVMs) in each assembly segment of a parliamentary constituency. This too is being looked upon SC’s intervention in the elections as opposition has been accusing the BJP of winning elections with the help of hacking EVMs.  So, the issue is being dubbed as the victory of the Opposition and setback for the BJP. The matter is listed for further hearing soon with answer sought from ECI and the Centre.
Ramdev appeared, apologised to SC
Despite Yoga Guru Baba Ramdev apologising to the Supreme Court on misleading advertisement, the court also castigated the Centre and Uttarakhand government for inaction despite the court asking for their intervention in the misleading advertisement of Patanjali Group. The opposition has been targeting Baba Ramdev for being supporter of the BJP and his Ramlila protest against the UPA government before Narendra Modi took over tells the tale. This is another issue where the Opposition or a section of BJP detractors feel that the Supreme Court came down heavily on the BJP government. This is a severe dent into the image of the BJP government at the Centre on which Opposition may try to capitalise on.
Arrest of Arvind Kejriwal
The government at the Centre is accused of using ED, CBI and Income Tax departments to target opposition leaders and political parties to expand its base and defame the other political leaders for electoral gains. Arrest of Delhi chief minister Arvind Kejriwal is one such attempt and this may prove to be a big blow for the BJP as Kejriwal has the image of an honest leader. However, despite AAP trying hard to generate a momentum of protest to corner the BJP or the central government, it doesn’t look like to be happening. Has this been the case in 2014 or 2019, the entire Delhi would have been stand still. Supporters of AAP are not very enthusiast as a section feels where there is smoke there is fire.
Bail for Sanjay Singh
Last but not the least! The way AAP Rajya Sabha MP Sanjay Singh was granted bail in liquor scam case after six months, AAP seems to be upbeat that truth finally prevails. The message was clear that court did not find any money trail in the case of Sanjay Singh. But the court also made it clear that Sanjay Singh was released on terms and conditions to be fixed by Trial Court; Concession should not be cited as precedent; and there was no comment on merits of the case by the court. Sanjay Singh has also been asked not to speak about the case in public.
Now, the BJP and the Opposition is weaving its strategies on these lines, who will succeed and who will not is just a matter of couple of months when results will be out on June 4, 2024. But some more such moments are expected that both the NDA and INDIA will try to use for their benefits. So, lots of drama and developments in Delhi before elections are finally over.
