New Delhi (11.04.2025): The West Bengal government is introducing a selection committee to appoint Director General of Police (DGP) of the state without relying on the Centre’s nod. The West government will be the third state to do so after Punjab and Uttar Pradesh.
The Mamata Banerjee cabinet decided to constitute the committee on Tuesday. This was done around two years after the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) government in Punjab brought in legislation to independently appoint the State Director General of Police (DGP) without the Centre’s nod, the BJP government in Uttar Pradesh too approved similar guidelines for the selection of the State police chief bypassing the Centre in November 2024. For the last few months, the Bengal government has had an acting DGP — Rajeev Kumar (IPS: 1989: WB).
